World Cup is on

It's quite the thing to watch the World Cup (unlike the World Series
this involves more than 2 countries).
One of the more amusing things is a series of Budweiser ads showing
American commentators either preparing or watching footie and making the
most profoundly ignorant comments.
I have no idea if they've been posted on You Tube or somewhere else yet,
but if they have been check them out.

If you haven’t heard of the recent child abuse reports in Ireland, hit the Googles. We’ll wait. Pretty fucked up, eh? It’s a mess. On the other side, it seems that there is a forming backlash against the power of the Catholic Church in Ireland. Part of this backlash is a movement to leave the church . It seems that this is belied a bit by the recent passing of the Blasphemy Law in Ireland. We can take it as read that this is a massive step backward from freedom of expression. And all for a victimless crime. The nice thing is that there is a backlash against this as well with commentary and with Irish atheists promising to test the law out. It boggles the mind that there’s even a debate about this sort of crap.

The slow drift towards theocracy in the US is of concern to all of us. With so many people in a slow orbit around the States, beholden culturally and economically, the influence is pernicious and destructive. The ongoing resurgence in creationism is a worry to anyone who values a search for the truth rather than mere truthiness; who values inquiry rather than dogma; who values freedom with its attendant risks rather than a safe, stultifying oppression of questionably good intentions. Recently myself and a few other bloggers came under fire from the giving, generous, meek and mild over at ChristianGovernment.ca. The folks at Christian Government are scary-creepy whack-a-doodles in the American mold, all the fire and bluster of any number of social regressives.
